AVE MARIA, Fla. – A cold second half shooting from the floor doomed the Madonna University women's basketball team as the Crusaders fell 81-59 to NAIA Division I No. 20-ranked Auburn Montgomery on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 30) at the Ave Maria Holiday Classic inside Golisano Field House.
The game also marked the final non-conference game of the season for MU.
Senior forward Kaylee McGrath (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) and sophomore guard Rachel Melcher (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Marian Catholic) led the Crusaders with 15 points each to go along with 13 points from senior guard Shantelle Herring (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota).
The Crusaders fell behind by as many as 10 points in the first half before getting a jumper from Herring and a triple from senior guard Heather Pratt (Flushing, Mich. / Flushing) at the buzzer to trail by just five, 35-30, at halftime.
Coming out of the break MU pulled within three, 35-32, after a pair of free throws from McGrath but a 9-0 AUM run put the Warhawks on top by 12, 46-34, with 15:21 left in the game.
MU got to within eight on a pair of occasions but could not get any closer as the Crusaders shot just 26 percent (10-for-38) from the floor in the second half. For the game, MU shot 31.9 percent (22-for-69).
The Crusaders open 2013 with a return to conference play. MU kicks off the New Year with its first ever meeting against Lawrence Tech on Wednesday night. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at the Activities Center and is the first game in a double header with the MU men's team.
