LIVONIA, Mich. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - - After being held scoreless in its first two matches of the season, the Madonna University women's soccer team exploded for four goals in a 4-0 shutout of visiting St. Xavier, picking up the first victorious decision of the season on Saturday (Aug. 27) at Anders Field.
Freshman Kaitlyn Krysiak (Madison Heights, Mich. / Lamphere) had an impressive career debut, scoring the first two goals of the match just over seven minutes apart in the first half on assists from sophomore Lilliana Serratos (Dearborn, Mich. / Dearborn) to back up senior Chelsea Gregg (Livonia, Mich. / Clarenceville) who posted her first clean sheet of the season.
MU controlled the offensive pace of the game early and had a pair of scoring chances in the first 10 minutes. Senior Chelsea Shrewsbury (Milford, Mich. / Milford) broke in on SXU's Ashley Shugar alone and sent in a hard shot that rang off the left goal post to keep the game scoreless in the ninth minute. Freshman Ashley Parent (Amherstburg, Ontario / General Amherst) had MU's next chance but Shugar snared the line drive shot.
The Crusaders finally cracked the scoring column in the 31st minute when Krysiak took a lead pass from Serratos into the 18-yard box and beat Shugar one-on-one to put the home side on top 1-0.
Just over seven and a half minutes later the duo teamed up again for almost an identical goal that made it 2-0 and sent the two teams into the locker room with MU on top.
Coming out of the intermission the Crusaders added another goal when Parent scored her first career goal in the 60th minute, taking a pass from senior Diana Brda (Westland, Mich. / Franklin) near the top of the box and beat Shugar to the right side of the net for a 3-0 lead.
Brda provided a second assist, this one in the 88th minute as her corner kick bounced free in the box to the foot of sophomore Amanda Ferrick (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) who buried the ball into the net for the 4-0 final.
Gregg was stellar in net for MU, stopping all four of SXU's shots on goal while Shugar made five saves for the Cougars.
MU is now idle until after classes start for the semester. The Crusaders return to the pitch on Sept. 8, taking on the University of Detroit. Kick off at Titan Field on the McNichols Campus is set for 4 p.m.
