ADRIAN, Mich. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - - A pair of first inning runs in game one and an 11-run sixth - that included three home runs - in game two helped the Madonna University softball team to a sweep over Siena Heights at Christensen Memorial Field on Wednesday (April 20).
Sophomore Arielle Cox (Newport, Mich. / Airport) led Madonna with six runs batted in, all coming in game two. Cox joined junior Hallie Minch (Garden City, Mich. / Garden City) and freshman Erin Mayes (Ida, Mich. / Ida) with home runs as part of the Crusaders' 11-run sixth inning in the night cap. Mayes posted three hits on the day and drove in four runs while sophomore Jackie Barley (Tipton, Mich. / Tecumseh) collected three hits in game two and four on the day. Tonya Berta had a three-run triple in game two to lead SHU.
Minch (14-3) earned the win in game one, scattering three hits for her second straight shutout of the Saints. Senior Jess Irwin (Monroe, Mich. / Monroe) picked up the game two win, striking out eight to improve to 15-5 on the year. Katie O'Hotzke suffered the loss in both games for SHU, falling to 5-18 this season.
The Crusaders scored all of their runs in game on in the first inning when Mayes drove in senior Kelly Lesko (Trenton, Mich. / Trenton) and Barley for a 2-0 lead.
Minch worked out of trouble in the seventh after the lead off batter reached but saw her defense record the next three outs for the win.
The day's second game saw the home standing Saints plate three runs in the bottom of the second on Berta's triple to take a 3-0 lead.
MU got on the board in the fourth and fifth with single runs to trim the deficit to just one run, 3-2. Cox got the scoring started for MU in the fourth with a RBI ground out to score senior Tara LaMilza (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Regina Catholic). Mayes made it a one-run game in the fifth, scoring from third on a SHU error.
The Saints got both of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth when Chelsea Clovinski hit a two-run homer to left to put SHU back on top by three, 5-2.
The Crusaders blew the game open in the top of the sixth, scoring 11 times. Cox once again started the scoring in the inning with a two-RBI single to pull MU back to within one, 5-4. Following a Saint' pitching change, Barley singled home Lesko to put MU on top for the first time, 6-5. Mayes then homered to right to score Two batters later LaMilza walked and Minch followed her with a two-run homer to right to put MU on top 10-5. Cox capped the scoring for MU with her first home run of the season, a three-run shot to right that put the Crusaders in front 13-5.
Minch came in to close out the game and worked around a one-out walk to complete the sweep for MU.
The Crusaders take Thursday off before traveling to Indiana Tech for a Friday (April 22) doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
