LIVONIA, Mich. ( - - The Madonna University men's basketball team climbed out of a pair of early 10-point deficits to rally and snatch away an 86-79 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference win over visiting Concordia University on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 5) inside the Activities Center.

Senior Bryant Slaughter (Westland, Mich. / Cherry Hill Academy) led all players with 21 points off of the bench for MU (7-18; 5-8 WHAC). Fellow senior Geoff Gaylor (Roscommon, Mich. / Roscommon) posted his eighth double-double of the season with 14 points and 14 rebounds off of the bench as well. Gaylor also added five blocked shots. A pair of Crusader freshmen - Bobby Naubert (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) and Travis Schuba (Rapid City, Mich. / Kalkaska) - both scored 12 points and redshirt junior Tyler Coker (Whitmore Lake, Mich. / Whitmore Lake) chipped in with nine points and 10 rebounds. Chad McMullen led CUAA (14-12; 6-6 WHAC) with 17 points while Marius Williams added 16 points and 13 assists for the Cards.

The Cardinals used five 3-pointers to open the game - all coming off of Williams assists - to take a 15-5 lead with 15: 44 left in the half. The Crusaders used a Slaughter bucket followed by a pair of Naubert free throws to pull back to with in six, 15-9, with 14:17 left.

CUAA retook a 10-point lead, 19-9, but MU then began a 13-2 run over the next five minutes to take a 22-21 lead with 9:35 left in the opening half. The two sides then traded baskets with MU only able to push its lead out to four on a pair of occasions, the last coming on a pair of Schuba free throws with 58 seconds left.

The Cards made it a one-point game heading into intermission thanks to a bucket from Austin Cook and a free throw from Williams that made it 39-38 in favor of the Crusader after 20 minutes.

The Crusaders used the first four minutes of the second half to take a 10-point lead, 55-45. Slaughter started the 16-7 run with a bucket and MU also got a triple from redshirt junior Josh Gay (Woodburn, Ind. / Woodlan) before Slaughter was fouled on a 3-point try and converted all three free throws to make it 55-45.

A Gaylor turnaround jumper in the lane pushed the MU lead out to its largest margin, 69-56, with 9:30 left. The Crusaders kept the Cardinals at bay but a 4-0 CUAA run capped by a Rocco Holmes layup pulled CUAA to with in six, 74-68 with 3:13 left.

The Crusaders pushed the lead back out to nine on free throws from Gaylor and junior Mike Clark (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) but Cook hit a three and a free throw to make it a five-point game, 77-72 with 48 seconds to go.

Clark sank another pair of free throws to make it 79-72, but Williams sank a triple to make it a four-point game, 79-75.

After Clark and Coker both sank a pair of free throws to make it 83-76, John Shaeffer hit a three to once again make it a four-point game, 83-79. That was as close as CUAA got as Naubert and Schuba combined to hit three of their four free throws for the 86-79 final.
