SYLVANIA, Ohio (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - - The Madonna University men's basketball team built a 20-point lead at halftime but saw that lead erased over the first 11-plus minutes of the second half and fell to a scrappy Lourdes College side by a 65-62 final on Tuesday night (Nov. 23) inside a raucous Tam O'Shanter Complex.
The Crusaders (1-6) shot a blistering 62 percent (16-for-26) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes but just 26 percent, making just seven field goals in the second half. On the flip side, the Gray Wolves shot 48 percent (14-for-29) in the second half to overcome the deficit and claim their fifth win of the season and split the season series with MU to this point.
Senior Bryant Slaughter (Westland, Mich. / Cherry Hill Academy) led MU with 13 points and redshirt sophomore Kevin Henry (Toledo, Ohio / St. Francis DeSales) joined Slaughter in double figures with 11 markers in a return to his home state. LC's Joe Davis led all players with 23 points while Brett Young added 17 points and nine rebounds for the Gray Wolves.
After trading buckets over the first five and a half minutes, MU took a six point lead, 13-7, on a three from redshirt junior Josh Gay (Woodburn, Ind. / Woodlan) before the Royal Blue and Gold extended its lead to double digits on a pair of Gay free throws and a Slaughter jumper to go on top 17-7.
MU maintained a double digit lead the remaining 13:40 of the half, taking a 44-24 lead at the buzzer on a put back by senior Ryan Waidmann (Canton, Mich. / Canton) to end the half.
Coming out of intermission, Lourdes opened the half on a 26-6 run over the first 11:04 of the half to pull back to with in two at 52-50. The next trip down the floor, the Gray Wolves tied the game for the first time all night, 52-52, on a jumper from Davis.
A pair of LC free throws followed by a three from John Washington put the Gray Wolves up by five, 57-52. Senior Geoff Gaylor (Roscommon, Mich. / Roscommon) pulled MU back to with in three with a bucket but two more free throws put Lourdes back on top by five, 59-54, with 5:28 to play.
The two sides traded free throws over the next five minutes and the Gray Wolves clung to the six-point cushion, 65-59, with less than 20 seconds left. Slaughter nailed a three with nine second to go, pulling MU back to with in three, 65-62.
Young then missed both ends of a two-shot free throw to give MU a chance to tie and send the game into overtime but Slaughter's three was short and the Gray Wolves took away the 65-62 win in their first ever home game in program history.
With the Lourdes' win tonight, the season series is now 1-1 and the rubber game of the series is set for Monday (Nov. 29) inside the Activities Center. Tip-off for MU's home opener is set for 7 p.m.
