HOLLAND, Mich. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - - In a battle of Wayne County rivals, the Madonna University men's basketball team took Marygrove College to overtime, but it was the Mustangs who came out on top, 72-69 in the consolation game of the 2010 Russ DeVette Memorial Tournament inside the DeVoss Field House at Hope College on Thursday night (Dec. 30).

Freshman Bobby Naubert (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) led the Crusaders with 19 points and five assists en route to all-tournament honors. Senior Geoff Gaylor (Roscommon, Mich. / Roscommon) posted a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with a career-high seven blocks. Brandon Carlson led the Mustangs with 19 points and was one of four Mustangs in double-figures.

In the overtime period, Marygrove broke the tie with a Carlson free throw just 15 seconds in but Naubert tied the game for the sixth time with a free throw to make it 60-all. Carlson put Marygrove on top again with a jumper before redshirt junior Tyler Coker (Whitmore Lake, Mich. / Whitmore Lake) knotted the game at 62-all with a jumper of his own.

After MC went up by four, 68-64, with 1:22 left Gaylor cut the deficit back down to two with a jumper with 59 ticks left on the clock. Chris Sinagoga put the Mustangs back up by three with a pair of free throws but freshman Travis Schuba (Rapid City, Mich. / Kalkaska) made it a one-point game, 70-69 with a three and nine seconds left. That was as close as the Crusaders got as Sinagoga converted another pair of charity tosses and Schuba's last chance three went wide for the 72-69 final.

The two sides traded baskets in the early going with MU leading 14-13 with 10:29 left in the half. The Crusaders then started a 12-0 run over the next three minutes to claim a 26-13 lead. The run was sparked by seven points from junior Mike Clark (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) to go along with a three from Naubert and a score from Gaylor.

Marygrove cut the Madonna lead down to eight, but another MU run, this one a 7-0 run, put the Crusaders on top by 15 after a three from Schuba and baskets from Gaylor and Naubert to make it 33-18 with 4:36 left in the half.

The Mustangs were able to whittle the lead back into single-digits, going on an 8-0 run over the last 4:09 of the half to trail 36-29 heading into halftime.

The Crusaders and Mustangs traded baskets over the first 16-plus minutes of the second half, with the Crusaders able to push their lead up to nine, 51-42, on a three from senior Ryan Bahnmiller (Commerce Township, Mich. / Walled Lake Northern) with 10:38 left.

Marygrove eventually tied the game at 55-all with 3:17 left but Madonna retook the lead on a pair of Naubert free throws and a jumper from senior Ryan Waidmann (Canton, Mich. / Canton) to go back up by four, 59-55 with 2:31 left.

A Carlson jumper made it 59-57 before a jumper from Justin McKinney tied the game for the fifth time, 59-all with 43 seconds left. The Mustangs had a chance to win with one final shot but Gaylor was able to block Darryll Dixon's shot to send the game to the decisive overtime period.

The Crusaders now ready themselves for the restart of WHAC play on Wednesday night (Jan. 5), making the short trip to Ann Arbor to face off with Concordia in a 7:30 p.m. tip.
